Neurological and Back & Spine Minimally Invasive Surgical Procedures Performed by a Leading, US-Based Neurosurgeon

An estimated 80% of Nigerians suffer from back pain. The causes of back pain are extremely varied, with some involving muscles, ligaments or tendons, others herniated discs, fractures or arthritis and yet others congenital & traumatic deformities or cancer.

While a number of conditions can be addressed or managed through non-operative means, surgery can be the only way to relieve severe, debilitating back pain as well as numbness and loss of motor control.

In Partnership with RNZ, Euracare offers world-class neurological and back & spine surgery services performed by Professor Olawale Sulaiman, Chairman for the Neurosurgery Department & Back and Spine Center at Ochsner Health Systems, New Orleans, USA.

Professor Sulaiman has extensive expertise and experience in all major back & spine surgical procedures, including:

  • Lumbar or spinal decompression, i.e. the removal of a small portion of bone to relieve pressure on a “pinched” nerve
  • Lumbar or spinal fusion, i.e. the joining of two or more vertebrae to prevent movement between them
  • Lumbar or spinal deformity correction

At Euracare, these procedures are performed using minimally invasive techniques such as micro-discectomy. The benefits of minimally invasive surgery over “traditional”, open surgery are many and significant:

  • Small incisions, few incisions, or no incision
  • Less pain
  • Low risk of infection
  • Short hospital stay
  • Quick recovery time
  • Less scarring
  • Reduced blood loss

Euracare’s integrated Operating Theater is specially configured for minimally invasive surgery and is equipped with such equipment as an Olympus surgical microscope and a Siemens C-Arm.

In fact, the first minimally invasive spine surgery in Nigeria was performed by Professor Sulaiman at Euracare on April 27th 2017 (see here  and  here ).

Professor Sulaiman also performs procedures to address non-spine-related conditions, including:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (nerve compression causing pain, numbness, and tingling in the fingers)
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (nerve compression causing pain, numbness, burning/electrical sensations and tingling in the foot and heel)
  • Cubital Tunnel Syndrome (nerve compression causing pain, numbness and weakness in the arm and hand)

An accurate diagnosis is critical in determining the patient’s exact condition and designing the appropriate treatment course. For this, Professor Sulaiman relies on Euracare’s world-class medical imaging and diagnostic equipment:

  • 1.5 Tesla MRI
  • 64-Slice CT
  • Digital X-ray
  • Ultrasound Systems
  • Clinical Laboratory
