Minimally-Invasive Interventional Cardiology Procedures Performed by a Fully U.K./Canada-Trained Specialist

Non-invasive cardiology is not always sufficient to address cardiac conditions.
In these cases, patients are referred to an interventional cardiologist.
Interventional Cardiology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment abnormalities in the arteries and chambers of the heart by resorting to a procedure called cardiac catheterization.
The specificity of cardiac catheterization is that, instead of resorting to “open” surgery, the interventional cardiologist inserts a long thin tube called a catheter into an artery or vein through a small incision.
Cardiac catheterization is much less invasive than open surgery, which has four main benefits:
- the procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia
- the recovery time is cut down from weeks to a few days at most
- the risk of complications is reduced dramatically
- scarring is minimal or even absent

Fully trained in the U.K. (Royal Brompton Hospital, Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital & Great Ormond Street Hospital, London) and Canada (Toronto General Hospital, Toronto) he is a specialist in both adult and pediatric congenital & structural heart disease.
Heart and coronary conditions and diseases that can be diagnosed and treated through cardiac catheterization include:
- Atherosclerosis- a gradual clogging of the arteries by fatty materials and other substances in the blood stream
- Cardiomyopathy- an enlargement of the heart due to thickening or weakening of the heart muscle
- Congenital heart disease- defects in one or more heart structures that occur during fetal development, leading to abnormal blood flow within the heart.
- Heart failure- condition in which the heart muscle has become too weak to pump blood well,
- Heart valve disease- malfunction of one or more of the heart valves that can affect blood flow within the heart
Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi has extensive experience in performing the cardiac catheterization procedures required to address these conditions in both adult and pediatric patients. Here’s a sample of the procedures he’s performed safely and successfully at Euracare over the recent months:
- Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) – the patient swallows a small probe, about the size of a little finger, which allows a closer look at the heart’s structure and function, as well as at any abnormal tissue around the heart valves, blood leaking backward through a valve and blood clots
- Coronary angiogram- a small catheter (hollow tube) is guided through a large artery into the patient’s heart, and dye is given through the catheter to show narrowing in the arteries, heart chamber size, how well the heart pumps, and how well the valves open and close, as well as a measurement of the pressures within the heart chambers and arteries.
- Angioplasty- a tiny balloon at the tip of the catheter is inflated, pressing any plaque build-up against the artery wall and improving blood flow through the artery
- Stent placement- a tiny metal mesh coil or tube at the end of the catheter is expanded inside an artery to keep it open
- Atrial Septal Defect (“hole in heart”) closure– a small device made of mesh and metal is inserted in an opening or hole in the wall that separates the two upper chambers of the heart to close it
- Balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty- a tiny balloon at the tip of the catheter is inflated, stretching and opening up a valve that had been preventing from functioning fully by a birth defect
